Fatima Al-Fihri
An inspirational series about marvelous Muslim men and women in Islamic history who achieved the extraordinary. Fatima Al-Fihri, the founder of the world’s first university is about a non-fiction figure from Islamic history. It is a story about a girl who wants to contribute positively to her community, this is her dream. As she grows up she is faced with loss and is left with a great fortune. However instead of dwelling on her loss or keeping that fortune for herself, she decides to do the extraordinary, she builds a Mosque that includes a place of learning. As years go by the Mosque becomes one of the biggest learning centres of that time and eventually the first university in the world. It is a story of family, loss, hope, and of great faith. As a young girl, Fatima has many dreams; she is surrounded by her loving family who encourages her to achieve her potential. Fatima has a little sister called Mariam, as they grow up in the light of their faith they both dedicate themselves to making the world a better place. This book is aimed at 6-12-year-old children. However, it’s the kind of book that will appeal to adults as well.

Such an Important book
Seeing that the traditional publishing industry loves to push stories on us about Muslim girls being deprived of formal education in various Muslim lands, it is so important for us to familiarize our children with the legacy of Fatima Al-Fihri. Thus, I am absolutely delighted that Muslim authors are doing their part and taking advantage of the self-publishing option to bring these stories to our kids. Not only does this book tell the biography of Fatima Al-Fihri, it also weaves in the spiritual aspect of sincerity, determination and gratitude. In this book, there are slightly more details about her personal life and her journey of overseeing the construction of the building as well as her faith. It also makes mention of her sister Mariam and her contribution to building Al-Andalus Mosque with her share of inheritance. There is an additional page in the end to discuss the lessons derived from Fatima’s story. Definitely a person our kids need to know about.

Soo worth it!
Salam alaikom, I bought this book and finished it within hours. It was what I needed right now – have you ever been reading through pages and you say Yesssssss to yourself? Well, your book made me do that. It was a masterpiece of what frames our minds, lives .. inner most being! It was also like advice from someone older you know how people older than you, have the ability (sometimes) to give us direction because they have either been through things before, such as heartbreaks and feeling stagnant and whatnot. In that sense, it was as though you spoke to the reader directly and knew what they went through. I love that. Honestly, I know on days i feel l need some direction and answers I will just pick it up again for upliftment. Thank you for such a gift.

How the author has incorporated the reason we wear hijab into a story that can be followed without it being dry and preachy is wonderful. I have read a few books on hijab and most of them have this common view of “everyone wears it for a different reason and my reason is…”
This book makes it clear to the audience that the hijab is worn to worship and please our Creator (SWT) however the journey of each individual is what’s unique for each of us.

Three cheers for Mr Blue!
Although my children are very young, I often wonder how I will explain to them why people may look at them differently for being Muslim. Raising any child with faith-based values in the times we live in at the moment is a challenge, especially when those values come from the Holy Quran – a book often misunderstood by those who have little or no understanding of its teachings or it’s followers.
I loved how the author used the colour blue as the main character despite that particular colour being associated with sadness. In this case, it gives the story a fresh perspective.
This book perfectly demonstrates what our children may face today in the way of prejudice despite, like Mr Blue, following a book that teaches nothing but good. It broaches a difficult subject in the most patient and loving way and gives hope to both the children and parents reading it.
We don’t live in a world where things are black and white but we do live in a world that’s red, yellow, purple, green and alhamdulillah full of Mr Blues ready to show the world how to spread nothing but good!
